That's what I'm up to now.
I got Seti@home but nothing was happening.
SETI is the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence, the program where they search the skies and analyze what they find, (radio waves,) to see if they can find intelligence.
Seti@Home is where you allow them to place a small program on your computer and when you're not using it, your computer helps analyze the signals.
Since nothing was happening at SETI, I put Rosetta@home and Poem@home on my computer and let them loose. Those programs are doing protein molecule folding in the search for cures for disease.
Whenever you're not using your computer for a certain length of time, (you decide how long,) your computer starts running this program. If you start doing something it instantly stops and lets you use your full computer.
By running multiple computers working on the same problem, they end up with a working supercomputer. Much of this science couldn't be done without our help. There are multiple @home programs, although I'm sticking with the pure science ones, run by Universities, not businesses.
If you're interested in participating go here: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
This is Seti@home and they will connect you with the program, (Boinc,) which allows you to run their program and add others if you're interested.
I recommend it.
If you're not using your computer, why not let science use it for no more than the cost of the electricity of leaving it turned on, and you're probably doing that anyway. And, even if you don't get credit, you still get to help participate in cutting edge science.
After all, they can't do it without you.
