"Very Bad Deaths"

... by Spider Robinson.
All of his stuff's pretty good, (I could almost be British with an understatement like that,) but this was a great comment on humanity as a whole.
I was only on page 7 and the main character is deciding on how he's going to kill himself. There hasn't been a lot of self-pity, or moaning and griping, etc... it's just a well-thought-out-and-decided, decision.
Then there's a knock at the door...
Now, he's already described how far out he lives, and it's really far out indeed, so there should be no one knocking at his door, no one at all. Yet his hand grabs his mouse as a defensive weapon and, as his mind considers this action, he comes to this:

"Silly, isn't it? I was planning my suicide...and ready to kill in self-defense. No wonder humans own the planet."

Need I say more?
